What you need
- Players
- A child and a grown-up
- Time
- 4 to 8 min
- Level
- Beginner and intermediate
- Equipment
- Ball, Partner (parent)
- Ball fed by
- A grown-up
- Space
- A yard or driveway
- Ages
- 8 to 14
Setup
- Stand about 3 to 4 m (10 to 13 ft) apart, facing each other.
- The grown-up holds the ball and tosses underhand to the child's waist.
- Catch the pass and toss again.
How it runs
The grown-up tosses an easy underhand ball to the child, who forearm passes it back so it can be caught at the chest without a step. The grown-up does not need to play volleyball: a soft toss and a catch are all it takes.
Time and reps: 3 rounds of 10 passes, 30 s rest.
Coaching points
- Arms like a table: straight, thumbs together.
- Point the table at your partner's chest.
- Lift with your legs, keep your arms still.
- Move your feet so the ball is in front of your belly button.
Ways to change it
- Easier: toss straight to the platform from closer.
- Harder: toss a step to the side so the child has to move first.
- Goal: 10 passes the grown-up catches without moving.
Make it easier or harder
Make it easier
- Toss slower and closer, and let the child catch the ball before passing it back.
Make it harder
- Toss a step short or a step to one side.

- Platform
- The flat surface your forearms make when you pass: arms straight, thumbs side by side, angled at the target.
Safety at home
Clear the space and keep tosses soft and easy. Stay away from windows, TVs and anything breakable; outside is best.
- Grown-ups toss underhand to the child, never hard.
- Stop if a finger hurts or swells.
