Setup
- Use half the court width, with three players each side. With 12 players run two games side by side.
- Start with an easy serve from a distance the player can reach. Rotate jobs after five rallies.
How it runs
Three players a side build a rally on a narrow court. Pass to the setter, set high, then send a standing free ball over. Count three-contact returns together. Start with one catch on the second contact if needed, then remove it.
Time and reps: 10 to 20 minutes.
Coaching points
- Send the first ball high enough for a teammate to get under it.
- Call who takes the second ball before it drops.
- Face the open court and send the third contact in.
Make it easier or harder
Make it easier
- Let the second-contact player catch and toss to a teammate, who sends the third ball over.
Make it harder
- Remove catches and make the third contact a controlled attack.
Terms on this page
- Free ball
- An easy ball the other team sends over without attacking it, usually a pass or a set. It gives you time to set up your own attack.
- Setter
- The player who usually takes the second contact and sets the ball to a hitter.
- Attack
- Any hit that sends the ball at the other team, other than a serve or a block. A spike, a tip and a roll shot are all attacks.
