- Space
- A full court
Setup
- Five players a side: three front row and two back row. Keep the court full width; with 12 players, rotate the two extras after each round.
- A coach with a cart feeds the second ball from beside the serving side. Keep loose balls off court before starting the next rally.
How it runs
Two teams play a serve rally. Feed a free ball to the team that won the first rally. That team must win again to earn one wash point. If the other team wins the second rally, neither scores. Alternate the serving side after each pair. Play to five wash points. The clip shows receivers winning both balls.
Time and reps: 12 to 20 minutes.
Coaching points
- Finish the first rally before thinking about the next ball.
- Call free and recover off the net together.
- Clear the court, then feed the next ball.
Make it easier or harder
Make it easier
- Use easy serves and high free balls while teams learn the scoring.
Make it harder
- Vary the free-ball location so the winning team has to reset and call it early.
Terms on this page
- Free ball
- An easy ball the other team sends over without attacking it, usually a pass or a set. It gives you time to set up your own attack.
