Setup
- A clear stretch of wall with a strip of tape about 3 m (10 ft) up.
- One player 1.5 to 2 m (5 to 7 ft) from the wall, facing it, with a ball.
- Start with a self toss, then set every rebound back above the tape.
How it runs
A setter stands just under 2 m (7 ft) from a wall with a tape line about 3 m (10 ft) up. The setter tosses the ball up to start, then sets it against the wall above the tape again and again, moving under each rebound and setting it back with the same hand shape. Count the sets in a row and start again after a drop.
Time and reps: 5 sets of 20 in a row, 20 s rest.
Coaching points
- Make a window with your hands just above your forehead and look through it.
- Push with your legs and arms at the same time.
- Soft fingers: catch the ball's shape for a moment, then release.
- Meet every ball at the same spot above your head.
Ways to change it
- Step farther back from the wall.
- Alternate a high set and a low set.
- Turn a full circle between sets.
Make it easier or harder
Make it easier
- Stand closer to the wall and lower the tape line.
Make it harder
- Raise the tape line.
